The Question Remains … Whose Interests Would Kathleen Matthews Represent If Elected?

-by Jeffrey HearnI finished writing the following post when there was about a week left in the 2016 Democratic primary campaign in Maryland’s Eighth congressional district. I was then working for Jamie Raskin, the progressive front-runner for the nomination whose chief rival throughout the primary had been Beltway insider Kathleen Matthews.

WATCH: Maryland Cop Shoots Man in Back in Negligent Discharge

A Maryland cop who serves as a firearms instructor and was caught on video shooting an unarmed burglary suspect in the back in April was no-billed by a grand jury.
The Laurel Police Department, and the cop who has not yet been named, claim the shooting of Rawshawn Lavon Curbean was unintentional, but Curbean’s attorney Patrick Preller said, “Mr. Curbeam was unarmed, shot in the back and not posing a threat to the officer when he was shot down.”

Baltimore Cops Commended for Shooting Mentally Ill Suspect After Body Cam Footage Released

Two Baltimore cops who shot a mentally ill man as he wielded knives and a cane on Friday were commended by their police union president.
“We support Officers Jones and Brown and commend them on their actions as they did what was necessary to protect the lives of many others, as well as their own,” said Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 President Gene Ryan.
Video footage of the shooting was released on Wednesday after about 30 protesters assembled at the scene of the shooting last week.

Washington D.C. Cop Thrown to Ground and Punched in Face by Maryland Cops in Case of Mistaken Identity

A Maryland cop searching for a shooting suspect described only as a “black man with a hoodie and jeans” ended up pouncing on a black man with a hoodie and jeans walking down the street, slamming him to the ground and handcuffing him while another officer punched him in the face.
Turns out, the man was an off-duty cop.
Now Washington D.C. police officer Robert Parker Jr., 28, is claiming racial profiling.
However, the Prince George’s County police officer who accosted him is also black, if that makes any difference. The officer who punched him is white.

Maryland Man Calls 911 for Medical Emergency, Only to be Killed by Responding Cops

A distraught 21-year-old Maryland man called 911 for help last Sunday, thinking an ambulance would transport him to the hospital, only for Baltimore County police to arrive and kill him.
It was a common scenario considering the number of people killed in this country after their family members call 911 for a medical emergency.
But Tawon Boyd’s case is unique in that he was the one who called 911 for help.
