LONDON– The recent triggering of Article 50 of the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty by the United Kingdom has formally set into motion the process of Britain’s departure from the EU, an action that is in line with the result of last June’s referendum, where 52 percent of British voters chose to leave the union.

Emmanuel Macron’s French Presidential campaign continues to put out nonsense stories about ‘Russian hacking’. The bogus stories have been described by Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov in the following way,

“It resembles the accusations made by Washington, which to this day remain hollow, doing no honour to the people making them”.

The establishment got another burning in the French elections on Sunday, revealing again that there is no level of voter disgust that will not find some voice in the current range of elections.  The terror for pollsters and the establishment now is whether Marine Le Pen will realise her anti-Euro project and drag the French nation kicking and moaning into a new, even more fractious order. In her way will be the pro-European Union figure of Emmanuel Macron.

Marine Le Pen has temporarily resigned from her role as leader of her party, Front National.
Le Pen described her move in the following way,

“I have always considered that the president is the president of all the French. Under this banner, he or she must unite all the French.
Tonight, I am no longer the president of the Front National. I am the presidential candidate.
I will be above partisan considerations”.

It remains theoretically still possible for Marine Le Pen to win the French Presidential election.
The opinions on foreign policy of the conservative candidate François Fillon are close to hers, and her overall programme should in theory be attractive to his conservative Catholic electoral base.

France will see the far-right, xenophobic Front National candidate Marine Le Pen face off against Emmanuel Macron, an investment banker who hasn’t held public office, in a runoff vote on May 7, as the first round of an unusual presidential election concluded with Sunday’s vote.
Students immediately took to the streets in protest against Le Pen’s success in the first round, the Associated Press reported Sunday.
