On August 9 a presidential election was held. The Electoral Commission declared that President Lukashenka had won his sixth consecutive election with 80% of the vote. The president has been in office since 1994. The 66 year old has no intention of resigning.
The Baltic States have become the scene of NATO military actions especially aimed at provoking Russia and Belarus.
At the end of September, this year’s largest military exercise “Sword 2020” will take place in Latvia.
Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko won’t be included on the EU sanctions list above all due to the position taken by Germany as well as by France, German and Italy.
Berlin, Paris, and Rome stated that “despite all circumstances, connection channels with Lukashenko should be kept open,” because, in their opinion, his blacklisting would lead to a complete suspension of dialogue with Minsk.
At the same time, the position of the EU is perceived controversial in the Baltic States, in particular in Lithuania.

Belarus has been occupied and governed by many of the European empires to include the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, Napoleon, the Russian Empire and Germany during the second world war. It lastly became part of the Soviet Union in 1946.
