(RPI) By the end of this month, Defense Secretary James Mattis and National Security Advisor HR McMaster will deliver to President Trump their plans for military escalations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was already making much of his plans to lambaste President Trump during his DC visit later this month, complaining about the US provision of arms and military support to Kurdish factions that Turkey considers terrorists.
The Russian Defence Ministry has held a pres briefing detailing the nature and implementation of the safe-zones in Syria which are currently operational.
The most important confirmed fact is that each safe zone will be heavily patrolled by the military forces which are party to the Astana agreement. This includes Russia, Iran and Turkey. Others, including Syrian forces will also be able to participate as discussions continue to help organise and police the safe zones.
Alongside the agreement in Astana between Russia, Turkey and Iran to set up ‘de-escalation areas’ in Syria, it is clear that diplomatic contacts between the US and Russia about Syria have intensified significantly in recent days, with the White House and the Kremlin engaging in the first positive interactions they have had since Donald Trump’s inauguration in January.
Publication of the Memorandum setting up the ‘de-escalation areas’ signed by the representatives of Russia, Turkey and Iran at the Astana conference, together with certain comments about them by representatives of the Russian and Syrian governments, have clarified their intended purpose.
The latest issue the ISIS jihadist publication, Rumiyah magazine (distributed online in 10 languages) highlights a series called “Just Terror Tactics”, praising jihadists, including U.S. terrorists, who have “set heroic examples with their operations.”
