Glyphosate

A report published August 15 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) shows how some oat products, including oat cereals, oatmeals, and granola and snack bars, contain unsafe levels of glyphosate – a chemical in the controversial weedkiller Roundup.
Nearly 3/4 of the oat products tested by the EWG contained higher levels of glyphosate than what the group’s scientists have deemed “protective of children’s health,” the report reveals.

Naturally, Monsanto will appeal the verdict, but this could become a precedent-setting case leading to further attempts to make Monsanto accountable for the illnesses caused by its products. A jury has awarded $250 million in punitive damages and nearly $40 million in compensatory damages to a former school groundskeeper who alleged in a lawsuit that glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller, caused him cancer. [1]
The plaintiff, DeWayne Johnson, was seeking $400 million in punitive damages and $39 million in compensatory damages from the biotech company, according to his attorney.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – A new study conducted by Argentinian researchers has found that glyphosate – the controversial herbicide marketed by Monsanto (now Bayer) as RoundUp – causes significant damage to pregnant lab rats and their fetuses at relatively low doses. The study, published in Archives of Toxicology, found that not only was the female fertility of pregnant rats impaired, but fetal growth was retarded and malformations were detected in their second-generation offspring.

Israel has been spraying Palestinian crops in Gaza with herbicides to damage the vegetation since 2014.  Officially, the crop dusting is only done on the Israeli side of the border fence, but Palestinian farmers and the Red Cross testified that the damage can be seen deep inside Palestine.  Glyphosate is the main herbicide that is used, which can stay in the soil for months or even years, and may have negative health effects.
