Oil Companies Dealt Blow After Blow on Plans to Ship Crude by Train
Neil Young singing to the junkies for oil. He's seen the needle and the damage done.by Gaius PubliusThe oil train dominoes are falling. Seems no one touched by oil at the transport end wants any part of it. Pipelines leak, 100- and 200-car trains blow up and burn, and fracking destroys health, lives and ground water. The key in all of these battles is local control, exercised by the very people in place to be the suffering recipients of all the damage done. Tony Bizjak writing at the Sacramento Bee (my emphasis):
Respect Local Democracy and Keep Britain Frack-Free
What is it with this government and fracking? They seem to be obsessed with drilling; the proven safe and truly renewable wind and solar energies are not for them. They want the earth penetrated by drilling and the injection of high pressure water, laced with a cocktail of nasty chemicals and sand, to frack the hell out of the rocks beneath our beautiful countryside.
Promises Not Kept
On his second day in office as president of the United States, Barack Obama issued an executive order to make good on his promise to shut down the Guantánamo Bay incarceration facility in Cuba. Nearly at the end of his second term as president, Obama has not yet realized his promise. The act of holding rendered people continues.
It is hardly surprising to the people when their political representatives fail to make good on their pledges. It is all too common in a system that the ruling classes bill as “democracy.”
New Study Definitively Links Texas Earthquakes to Fracking and Drilling
Since 2012, scientists have suspected that the earthquakes plaguing Texas and Oklahoma are results of wastewater injections from fracking and conventional drilling. And while they were relatively certain that the 2012 4.8 earthquake that rocked Eastern Texas was as a result of this phenomenon, they were still searching for definitive proof.
NASA: Fracking Is Source of Massive Methane "Hot Spot"
This map shows anomalous U.S. methane emissions (or how much the emissions differ from average background concentrations) for 2003 to 2009, as measured by the European Space Agency's SCIAMACHY instrument. The Four Corners area [circled]—the area where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet—is the only red spot on the map.
Government Pulls Water Supply of Dakota Protestors Despite Sweltering Heat
(COMMONDREAMS) Growing in number and spirit, the Standing Rock Sioux protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline is swiftly gaining strength ahead of a federal hearing on the controversial project.
Hillary Clinton’s ‘Pivot’ or ‘Spin’?
To stave off Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton became a born-again progressive, critical of trade deals and tough on fracking, but her preparations for a presidential transition presage a pro-corporate and hawkish administration, says Norman Solomon. By Norman Solomon Like other…Read more →
Study: Fracking may Increase Asthma Flare ups by 50%
A new study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), suggests that fracking may contribute to higher instances of asthma. It was recently found that those who lived near fracking sites had a more difficult time controlling their asthma than those who did not.
While the study involved 35,000 people living with asthma, the journal stated that the sample size was too small and that it is not proof of an effect at this time. Further studies will be conducted to attempt to find a correlation.
