The UK car industry is attempting to weaken European efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from new cars, Unearthed can reveal.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) – which represents UK-based manufacturers – responded to a European Commission consultation arguing that it should slow down the rate at which companies are required to reduce CO2 emissions levels and opposing targets for electric cars.
US oil major, Exxon Mobil, also wrote to the Commission stating that promoting the market uptake of electric vehicles is “unimportant”.
City and county councils in Oxford have submitted joint proposals to introduce a Zero Emission Zone in Oxford city centre. They say it would be the first of its kind in the world, and could lead to “historic” reductions in air pollution

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will delay a federal air pollution rule for 2 years, admitting that the decision will disproportionately harm children.
The agency said it will suspend standards aimed at preventing leaks from the oil and gas industry while it mulls the rule, which the Obama administration introduced in June 2016. The rule would reduce methane, a greenhouse gas, and emissions that lead to smog.
The EPA says the move will save the oil and gas industry roughly $173 million. [2]
President Donald Trump announced June 1, 2017, that he was withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate accord, keeping a campaign promise many had hoped he would abandon.
During a White House press conference, Trump said he was open to renegotiating aspects of the agreement. But France, Germany, and Italy said they considered the accord “a cornerstone in the cooperation between our countries, for effectively and timely tackling climate change” that could not be renegotiated. Donald Trump is set to overturn an Obama-era vehicle emissions rule following a letter from top car manufacturers, including Volkswagen.
This comes as the German manufacturer is embroiled in legal disputes over attempts to cheat previous emissions standards.
In a visit to Detroit, the heart of the American auto industry, the President is expected to reopen a review on fuel standards to come into force in 2022.
One of Norway’s nuclear reactors was discovered to be leaking radioactive iodine Monday morning, according to the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA). [1]
In a statement released today, the NRPA said:
“The radioactive leak was due to a technical failure during treatment of the fuel in the reactor hall. Emissions are low.”
