Judging by US foreign policy – China is a massive global threat – and by some accounts – the “top” threat. But a threat to what?

On May 7, 2020, yet another scandal broke out in South Korea. As readers may remember, every Wednesday, hundreds of people gather in front of the former building of the Japanese embassy in Seoul. Every week, activists, students and surviving comfort women (wianbu in Korean) join forces to demand a sincere apology and legal reparations from Tokyo.
The current COVID-19 pandemic has generated an enormous amount of media coverage, effective closing down of multiple economies, and an increasing barrage of propaganda aimed at apportioning blame to China. Whether any of these reactions are justified by the actual figures is a moot point. When the panic has subsided and countries return to normal levels of social, educational and economic activity, a sober analysis of causes and consequences will be well overdue.
On the card table where modern world politics are played, the state of affairs in Hong Kong remains a barometer which can provide a rough idea of the current trends in relations between the United States and China. Both of these superpowers play a major role in shaping the bigger global picture of today’s game.
With the US spiraling downward, a downward trajectory merely steepened by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, we’d expect other nations to suffer likewise.
But China, where we are told the virus first appeared, has already bounced back. While it has significant damage to repair socioeconomically, it has not only overcome the initial outbreak, but has put into place more resilient measures and means to weather future outbreaks.
Health Impact
Unfortunately, the author’s hopes that attempts to seek monetary compensation from China for its alleged role in the SARS-COV-2 pandemic would involve individuals rather than countries (and their nation-wide policies), first and foremost the United States, have been dashed.
