We wrote a post on Saturday-- published Sunday-- Are Democrats Going To Finally Get Behind Public Education For Real-- And Leave Charter Schools To The Republicans? that needs some updating. The education forum in Pittsburgh that the Democratic presidential candidates took part in has led to a valuable evaluation published by ElectraBlog.

When I look at polls I always have to remind myself of something I figured out when I used to run for office in college. I was elected freshman class president and, in my senior year, an at-laerge senator with more votes than any other candidate running. What I figured out at the time-- in the midst of the Vietnam War is that we start off with about a third of the people favoring, a third of the people opposing and a third of the people not sure or not caring about just about any contentious issue. At my school, it was that way over the war.

I had dinner with my old friend Danny Fields today. You may know him as the guy who discovered Iggy and the MC5 or as manager of the Ramones or as the guy from the movie, Danny Says, that came out last year. I met Danny 50 years ago. I was still a teenager, in college, and he was ten years older and working in the music buisiness and seemed very much the ideal, cool adult hipster. I had booked an unknown band I had met at a tiny club in New York over the summer to play my school in September, The Doors.

The great Barbara Lee (D-Oakland)I met the Doors in 1967 when they were recording their first album in New York. They had a residency in a tiny, little known club under the 59th Street bridge, Ondine's and I went… every night.
