As college students take their finals, the rest of us and breathe a sigh of relief to know that, for the next few months, we will be free from all the college foolishness we've been dealing with this academic year.

Much has been rightly said about recent attacks on conservative, libertarian, and other non-Leftist speakers on college and university campuses around the country. We should also appreciate that this is the renewed counter-revolution, which we have seen for a century, against the philosophical individualist and market-based foundations of the modern world.

Kentucky Wildcats head basketball coach John Calipari is largely credited with leading the way to establish what has become known as the "one and done" rule: basketball players must be at least one year out of high school before playing at the professional level. Many fans of college basketball are angry their elite players leave after a single year, but others are angry that there's a waiting requirement at all, which violates the freedom of contract.

New York is adopting free tuition under the Excelsior Scholarship. “Excelsior” is a reference to the state’s motto, and supposedly how lawmakers envision the recipients. But if students will be reaching “still higher,” they will do so while standing on the backs of others.
