Stupid Shit Cops Say to Keep You From Recording

As I dive deeper and deeper into the legal complexities of the right to photograph and record in public (I can quote Glik v Cuniffe so fast I will make your head spin), I have noticed a disturbing trend:
The reasons and excuses offered by police officers, firefighters, security officers, even teachers and principals, to keep you from taking a photograph are just plain pathetic.

New York State Senator Threatens Videographer with Arrest for Recording Public Meeting (Updated)

A New York state senator ordered a man to stop recording a public meeting Tuesday, telling him he did not have the right to record because he was not a resident of the county where the meeting was taking place.

NYPD Cops Return to Restaurant to Delete Video After Making Aggressive Arrests

Responding to a fight that broke out in a Brooklyn Ecuadorian restaurant Saturday, New York City police officers proceeded to arrest an employee not involved in the fight after he told them not to kick a handcuffed patron.

The incident took place in 2011 and Thomas’ father, Ron Thomas, filed the suit a year later.
But it was not until the day of the trial that the city council folded, agreeing to the settlement.

A man who was attacked by three San Antonio police officers last year while taking photos of his wife’s business is now paralyzed from the neck down.
But San Antonio police have already wiped their hands of the matter, saying they  had merely confused Roger Carlos with a violent felon whom they were chasing when they hopped out of a van and attacked him before realizing he was the wrong man.

Oakland Protesters Record Themselves Destroying Cop Car While Police Keep Body Cams Off Before Killing Man

Oakland protesters have always raised the bar when it comes to activism against police and this past weekend was no different when a mob of people surrounded a police car with flashing emergency lights and destroyed it.
Yelling, “fuck the police,” the crowd jumped on top of Oakland police car, shattering windows and smashing the roof down while recording early Sunday morning.
