The latest political scandal to hit Georgia tells us a lot about life in developing countries allied with the US. A lot of senior politicians are implicated in it. But the question being asked is not, “Who did what to whom?” but “Which external actor has created this scandal and to serve what purpose?”
All governments are corrupt and to many, corruption is endemic to their function. Sadly, Georgia may well fall into this group. However, given Georgia’s strategic position, wars and rumour of wars on all sides, the role seemingly chosen for Georgia may put that nation into a category of its own, neither a simple rogue nation nor a total police state dictatorship, not yet anyway.
Most Chechen commanders have shelf lives, not necessarily in terms of effectiveness on the battlefield but in terms of political usefulness. It seems that another one is about to find out the hard way that Chechens are only there to further objectives they don’t actually hold themselves, not become glorious martyrs able to pass unimaginable wealth on to their families.

Two weeks ago a horrendous crime was committed in Tbilisi which is still the talk of the town. Vakhtang Qiria, the chief prosecutor of Samegrelo Zemo Svaneti, a mountainous region of Georgia, was found dead in a rented flat on Vazha Pshavela Avenue. He died from a fatal gunshot to the head; however, his body had subsequently been dismembered.

Today people are getting sick with Swine Flu and Zika all over the world, with Ebola hanging back while we await the next outbreak. Diseases occur naturally, but since World War II governments have spent billions weaponising different viruses to be used alongside the usual crop of diseases, the old bacterial standbys like anthrax or smallpox and train loads of poison gas.
