Iran is moving ahead with plans to purchase advanced Russian weaponry now that UN sanctions have been lifted even as Republican president-elect Donald Trump vows to revisit and/or scrap the nuclear deal between the Obama Administration and Tehran.

Pakistan: Indian shelling kills seven soldiers

A number of Indian military servicemen have been killed as they exchange fire with Pakistani forces over the LOC border near Kashmir [Xinhua]
Pakistani military sources said on Monday that seven of its servicemen had been killed in overnight shelling from India across the Line of Control (LOC).
According to Pakistani media, Islamabad’s Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria tweeted strong condemnation of the “continuous unprovoked”.

European stocks rallied on Monday’s market open, in tandem with their American counterparts which reached record gains on Friday.
Some analysts have called it the “Trump Rally”.
At press time, London’s FTSE 100 index was up 0.83 per cent to 6,786.62; France’s CAC 40 was up 1.15 per cent to 4,540.96, and in Frankfurt the DAX was up 0.98 per cent to 10,772.35.

Modi rides Japanese ‘bullet train’

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe invited his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on a ride aboard the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to the port city of Kobe.
The ride, which comes on Modi’s second day of an official visit to Japan, is to introduce the Indian prime minister to the advanced technology of the bullet train which will be used on the 500-kilometer stretch of the Mumbai to Ahmedabad railway line.

Petrobras reports unexpected Q3 loss

In yet another challenge to President Michel Temmer’s drive to revitalize the Brazilian economy, the country’s biggest company – state-owned oil company Petrobras – reported a third-quarter loss on Friday, despite drastically reducing the value of oil fields and other assets.
Weak prices in the oil market worldwide hit the company hard resulting in a net loss of $4.9 billion in the last quarter, five times more than a year earlier.

Garment factory blaze kills 13 in India

Workplace safety standards are often overlooked in many quarters which leads to accidents such as these fires, activists say [Xinhua]
At least 13 factory workers were killed on Friday morning as a fire broke out in a garments factory in Ghaziabad, a suburb on the outskirts of the Indian capital New Delhi.
The fire reportedly injured eight others, four critically so, who were asleep inside the leather factory workshop.
The cause remains largely unknown, however police investigating the incident believe it was due to an electrical short circuit in the basement.
