Obama Just Expanded an Already Massive Ocean Reserve in Hawaii

On August 26, President Obama created the largest ecologically protected area on earth by expanding a national marine monument in Hawaii, his home state, to encompass more than half a million square miles. It’s called the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. [1]

This State may Become the 1st to Ban the Sale of Bee-Killing Neonicotinoids

Maryland has nearly become the first state in the U.S. to ban the sale of neonicotinoids, a class of pesticides which are a major contributor to the decline of honeybees.
Two bills previously cleared the Maryland State Senate and Maryland House of Delegates. The bills’ similarities were to likely to result in them being combined into a single piece of legislation to be sent to Republican Gov. Larry Hogan’s desk, where it could be signed into law.

Terminix Will Pay $10 Million To Family Sickened By Pesticide

The pest control company Terminix has agreed to pay $10 million to a family of 4 that was seriously sickened following a fumigation at a U.S. Virgin Islands resort.
Of the $10 million, $8 million will go towards fines, while another $1 million will go to pay restitution to the EPA. The remaining $1 million will fund a community service project in the Virgin Islands, according to federal authorities.

Germany’s 2nd Largest City Bans K-Cups in Government Buildings

Keurigs and other single-serve coffee makers make great coffee and they sure are convenient. But environmentally speaking, the little plastic coffee pods, or “K-Cups,” that house the coffee are a nightmare. So much so that the city Hamburg, Germany’s second-largest city, just became the first in the world to ban them.
