Italy refers NGO rescue ships to Libya

The Italian government is furthering its agenda of refusing to accept migrants. While Italy has been providing support to foreign NGO rescue vessels, and will continue where necessary, no such vessels within Libya’s zone of control are extended that service, being referred instead to Libya’s coastal services. Going forward, NGO rescue vessels, when in distress in Libyan waters are not to expect Italy to handle the crisis when Libya can address it.

Macron advocates sanctions for EU members refusing to accept migrants

Just before an informal meeting convened to discuss Europe’s approach to the ongoing migrant crisis, French President Emmanuel Macron advocated economic sanctions against EU member nations which refuse to admit migrants into their country in comments which drew the ire of Italian government ministers.
Macron advocates setting up closed centers to accommodate migrants at locations where they most often appear while they await for their asylum applications to be processed.

Italy’s migrant crackdown reveals fractures within the EU

As German Chancellor Angela Merkel races to find a solution to the migrant crisis in Germany by seeking a pan European solution, oppositional interests become more pronounced. As Merkel admits that a solution will come out of a formal bloc-wide meeting on the matter, Italy’s position on the migrant situation becomes more pronounced, and very much opposed to taking in any more refugees.

Merkel and Conte clash as migration issue threatens to split the EU

Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, butt heads as the migration issue exposes a growing divide between the EU’s member constituents.
Merkel has proposed a draft declaration to address the matter which contains a provision that could lead to the repatriation of migrants back to the EU nations in which migrants originally filed for asylum, which often means Italy or Greece, leaving them to disproportionately field the issue, a provision which Italy rejects.

Italy challenges the Western order

With a massive influx of immigrants from across Africa and the Middle East, and growing poverty, Italy voted in a populist government representing policies which would seem to virtually overturn the postwar European order.
The austerity measures which have been imposed upon the Italian people have pushed more and more of them down into poverty, with the poverty rate doubling over the course of the past decade.
