September 20th marks the anniversary of the last speech John F Kennedy delivered to the United Nations’ General Assembly. This event bears more relevance upon our present crisis than most people could possibly imagine.
For all the infinite variations of time, personality and circumstance, U.S. presidential elections in their final three or four months fit remarkably clearly into one of two clear patterns: There are those elections that are utter blow-outs where a decisive and usually landslide result was clear from the get go. And there are those that are cliffhangers – in doubt up to the very last second.
The U.S. political class of pundits, pollsters, columnists, and endless cable news blathering talking heads are currently putting forth the notion that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is having a problem with support from the Hispanic community. This argument is based on a disingenuously false premise that the Hispanic community is a political monolith that is gravitating, as it has in recent years, to Republican candidates.
There is an old saying that allegedly came out of the French Revolution, that revolution, like the god Saturn, devours its own children. It was reportedly uttered by Georges Danton at the trial that preceded his execution and could be applied equally to the demise of Trotsky after the Russian Revolution. It meant that the leaders that drove the dramatic political developments frequently get a taste of power and become resistant to any further change. They often end up turning on their own former followers who have different ideas on how to run the country.

This September marked 50 years since Salvador Allende’s Unidad Popular triumphed in the country’s democratic elections. On September 4, 1970, despite the CIA’s funding of right-wing politics to sabotage the electoral process, Chile chose socialism and was well on the way to prove that revolution could be carried out through democratic means – a process that created yet another hindrance for U.S. plans in the region. In January 2018 I advanced the hypothesis that U.S. President Trump understood that the only way to “Make American Great Again” was to disentangle it from the imperial mission that had it stuck in perpetual wars. I suggested that the cutting of this “Gordian Knot of entanglements” was difficult, even impossible, to accomplish from his end and that he understood that the cutting could only come from the other side.
Among the phrases that are guaranteed to trigger right-wing backlash are “global governance” and “world government.” However, when it comes to appointing foreign citizens to high government posts, conservative governments are at the forefront of such “global governance.” When British Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed former Australian Prime Minister (and fellow right-winger) Tony Abbott as an official adviser to the British Board of Trade, including a role in advising on the United Kingdom’s Brexit implementation, alarms were triggered in London and Canberra.
