The BRICS 9th Summit, which is scheduled to be held in the resort city of Xiamen in east China’s Fujian Province in September, will focus on strengthening global governance, Chinese media reported today.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the summit will be under the theme “BRICS: Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future” and look to complete the initiatives started at the Goa Summit last year.
Key issues will be furthering study on finalizing plans to establish an independent ratings agency which will appeal more to developing nations looking for fair criteria and assessments.
The BRICS countries will also look at means to expand the power and strengthen the international financial architecture of the New Development Bank, which is expected to make $2.5 billion in loans this year.
With China chairing this year’s BRICS Summit it is likely that member states will discuss the importance of globalization and means to counter protectionist policies – such as US President Donald Trump withdrawing from international organizations and treaties.
China is likely to impress on fellow members the importance of the Paris Climate Control Accords as a means to combat global warming.
High on the agenda will be efforts to deal with international terrorism and third-party intervention in regional crises.
