The New Mother of Exiles: A Sonnet for Esther Alvarado

Teetering on edge of suicidal;
He’s searching for the golden door
and hoping that hope is all more than lore.
She is unlike that towering idol.
She begs for an acceptance that is vital.
Please raise your arms, take up her plight evermore;
And tell young Eric his service on foreign shore
wasn’t in vein and wasn’t only for the entitled.
Lift him up like she lifted that bright lamp
To shine light on the darkness of the masses.
Recognize her sacrifice. Know this camp
is not exclusive. This mother surpasses
the duty to a nation. Raising a champ
that toasts with the greatest American glasses
