U.S. supports Latvia as NATO ally: visiting US official
RIGA: The United States is strongly committed to providing support to Latvia as a NATO ally, Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the United States Department of State, told the press during her visit to Latvia, Baltic News Service reported.
She said that presence of American soldiers not only demonstrated the U.S. support to Latvia but also was an excellent chance for the young Americans to gain knowledge about the Baltic states.
Nuland met with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and they discussed Latvia’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, the EU-US trade agreement, energy independence and various aspects of bilateral cooperation.
It was agreed to continue close cooperation towards strengthening security in the region. Rinkevics voiced hope that progress will be made in the talks about the EU-US free trade agreement during Latvia’s EU Presidency.
