Draft coalition agreement stipulates annulment of Ukraine’s non-aligned status
Participants in negotiations on setting up a coalition at the Ukrainian parliament are considering the annulment of Ukraine’s non-aligned status and the country’s membership of NATO in a draft coalition agreement.
The Petro Poroshenko Bloc’s website reported that the draft coalition agreement envisions the development and adoption of new versions of the Ukrainian National Security Strategy and Military Doctrine.
The draft agreement says that, among other things, “the Military Doctrine should contain the term ‘potential enemy’ and clearly determine criteria for recognizing a certain state or a group of states as a potential enemy.”
In addition, the draft coalition agreement suggests amending the laws on the foundations of domestic and foreign policy and on the foundations of national security, including “the annulment of Ukraine’s non-aligned status, the resumption of a political course toward integration into the Euro-Atlantic security space and membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and also the restoration of Ukraine’s national sovereignty over the territory of Crimea as one of the strategic goals.”
The draft coalition agreement stipulates that Ukraine’s defense expenses must amount to at least 3% of its GDP.
