Empire, Power & People with Andrew Gavin Marshall- Episode 126

The Kurdish Revolution

Largely overlooked and ignored, in the past few years, the Kurds – who are spread across Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran – have been undertaking a fascinating social revolution, built on principles of anarchism, social ecology, democratic federation and gender equality. At the same time as they are attempting to create a new alternative to the existing system of state tyrannies in the region, the Kurds have also become the most effective fighting force against ISIS, with self-organized militias made up largely of young women. The Kurdish social experiment represents a kind of symbolic antidote to the religious extremism, hate and barbarity of ISIS, though it also lacks the state support that ISIS receives. This episode takes a look at this new experiment filled with hope and possibility.
