Melissa Click, the University of Missouri communications professor who assaulted a student journalist, calling for some “muscle” to have him removed from a public area, was suspended Wednesday.
The decision by the university’s Board of Curators comes two days after she was criminally charged for assault for the incident on November 9, 2015.
If convicted, Click can serve up to a 15-day jail sentence and pay a $500 fine. She has already pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges.
She will continue to receive her $57,798.26 annual salary during her suspension.
According to the university’s website:
Pam Henrickson, chair of the UM Board of Curators, issued the following statement at the conclusion of tonight’s special board meeting:
“MU Professor Melissa Click is suspended pending further investigation.
The Board of Curators directs the General Counsel, or outside counsel selected by General Counsel, to immediately conduct an investigation and collaborate with the city attorney and promptly report back to the Board so it may determine whether additional discipline is appropriate.”
Whether this is an indication that she is close to losing her job remains to be seen because only two days ago, university officials said her job is safe as she goes through the tenure process, which, if granted, would allow her to do whatever she pleases – as if that would be anything new.
A group of republican legislators from Missouri have called for her termination but a group of professors are saying she deserves to keep her job.
But no, she does not deserve to keep her job.
It’s bad enough cops can get away with beating citizens for recording them but to now give college professors the green light that they can do the same?
And at a university that prides itself on its storied journalism program?
If the university’s newspapers are not going to say it, we will say it.
Melissa Click needs to go.
