A Taste of India

“East and West,
Never the twain shall meet.”
Gandhi: “be the change
You want to see in the world.”
A land of many contradictions,
Beauty, mystery, and reincarnation,
“Slum dog millionaire”
Abject poverty, sweat shops,
Ghettos, over populated,
All in the back drop of palaces,
And great wealth,
Remnants of colonial rule
Still lingers, strong scent of curry,
Sandalwood and Jasmine,
Fill the monsoon night air.
Farmer’s markets, growing crops,
Millions uneducated and,
Living a rural lifestyle of simplicity,
Fiercely religious steeped in tradition
Violence lies just under the surface.
Passive elephants can be found
Tigers still eat villagers, from time to time.
Young girls are gang raped and murdered,
Left hanging in trees for all to see what
A most senseless cowardly act looks like.
Corrupt police do nothing, midst a father’s pleas.
Lifeless innocent bodies dangle and
Gently turn back and forth.
How unfortunate that India has become known
As a place that hates and rapes innocent girls,
The Mongoose can kill Cobras…
We take comfort in knowing this.
