In the persona of a flower
Standing proud in a flower pot
On an urban apartment’s balcony
I can only cough and try not to suffocate
As smokes and toxic fumes drift over to me
All day and all night long!
In the persona of a fish
I constantly struggle not to nibble on wastes
Floating, like me and my shoal
In this vast ocean which was once a haven,
Why, from plastic objects to chemicals
Death lies in wait for us, in disguise!
In the persona of a cloud
I cringe as smokes, toxic and pricking
Fly up to me, merging in me
Repulsing me as to cause me to throw up acidic rain
When I should have been refreshing the whole world!
In the persona of the sun,
I grit my teeth
As I lose control over the intensity of my rays
Causing harm to humans
Burning their skin, sprouting diseases on them
Diseases, ranging from pimples to cancer,
Why, how can that be possible when
All I was meant to do was to feed them with my light!
In the persona of a human being,
I hesitate over what to choose as healthy consumption
The vegetables have been exposed to too much chemicals
The fish have been swimming in dirty water
The chicken and meat have been exposed to hormones
The wheat from which the bread was made have been watered with acidic rain!
In the persona of Mother Earth
I resign from my duties and close my eyes
In painful submission
If only, if only the solution would be met
If only, if only my essence would, once more, be
Like it used to be, flowing with purity!
Now, the ills of pollution over my creations
Are causing deformities to sprout all over me!
Pray, maybe if I take the persona of a painting
Kept safe in its frame
Shall I save myself from the ills of the venomous spits
Of toxic substances found all around me!
