Strolling with Doctor Frankenstein through GMO Cornfields

I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers….
— Mary Shelley, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus

A solitary stalk of heirloom maize, lonesome and forlorn,
out of place and unwelcome in a field of GMO sweet corn,
a naturally occurring organism surrounded by Frankenfood,
bioengineered behemoths with unnatural new traits imbued.
Maize genomes were modified and Frankencorn was born.
Evolved super weeds, glyphosate-resistant, flourish in the fields,
crowding out the Roundup-ready GMOs, lessening crop yields,
super weeds that scoff at the progeny of Victor Frankenstein–
the genetic engineers who think the world is theirs to redesign–
and bear witness to the inscrutable power Mother Nature wields.
