The Road to the Stars

Standing in the garden,
Surrounded by the night –
A still hot sky full of stars,
And a cherry tree full of cats.
All day hiding in the shady
Deep green bushes,
Sleeping the sun away,
While birds wilt, listless, in the heat.
Come the dusk and a hint of cool,
A promise of the dew,
And suddenly, a jumping,
A climbing and a scrambling,
A chasing up the branches –
Cats running up the roads
To the sky.
I never knew before,
That the cherry tree’s limbs
Were roads of infinity;
The universe’s highway
Trodden by cats
Reaching for the stars.
