Alphabet chief executive Eric Schmidt recently announced that Google will alter its search algorithm to “de-rank” results from Russia Today. The context and timing of Congressional hearings and the de-ranking of RT make a persuasive case for coercion. This is troubling because the American government, supposedly fully bound by the 1st Amendment, has resorted to bald threats in order to circumvent the rights-protections guaranteed to its citizens.
