Bas Spliet, a student Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Ghent, visited Syria between Friday 6 and Sunday 15 April. During this time, eastern Ghouta and Damascus made several headlines: the revival of reciprocal bombardment of eastern Ghouta and Damascus after the breaking down of negotiations, the singing of a final agreement that saw the last remaining militants evacuated out of Douma in exchange for the release of hundreds of prisoners held by Jaish al-Islam, allegations of yet another chemical weapons attack, and, last but not least, the bombardment of Syrian targets supposedly connected to the chemical attack by France, Britain, the United States and Israel.
Bas visited Damascus and eastern Ghouta, in addition to Homs and Tartus, during his journey. Entering on a press visa, he was able to talk to religious leaders, artists, officials, people involved in the tourism sector and, most importantly, civilians from all ethnic and religious backgrounds alike. The latter includes civilians from eastern Ghouta. Although the whole world has been talking about that particular area for the last couple of weeks, their voices, for some reason, remain unheard. This lecture will provide a stage for suppressed Syrian voices and, combined with Bas’ two years of research into the subject, will present an alternative perspective on the war in Syria.
The lecture will be in English.
