The Trump administration is considering imposing sanctions on Venezuela. But the evidence suggests that blocking Venezuelan oil from American ports will not work as a tactic. In all likelihood, sanctions on Venezuelan oil will do more harm than good and will end up punishing the wrong people. We saw this with sanctions on Syria, Cuba, North Korea, and the USSR. This strategy does not work.
