En tant que collectif de journalistes citoyens, engagés sur de multiples causes mais notamment sur les questions de libertés individuelles et de libertés d’expression, nous avons été très touchés par votre message adressé à notre pays. Il est vrai que nos députés ont brillé par leur absence à l’Assemblée Nationale lors de l’adoption du projet de loi constitutionnelle instituant l’état d’urgence permanent dans notre pays, ce qui est particulièrement inquiétant.
Mais il y a pire. Notre gouvernement est le premier au monde à lancer une véritable campagne contre le complotisme. À cet effet, il a même lancé un site internet au nom révélateur : « ontemanipule.fr »… Cette campagne est lancée, entre autres, par notre ministre de l’Éducation Najat Vallaud-Belkacem.
Le gouvernement entend ainsi lutter contre les théories du complot, qui seraient particulièrement en vogue auprès de la jeunesse. Sur le site internet du Ministère de l’Éducation, on peut ainsi lire :
Qu’est-ce que le conspirationnisme ?
Définition
Le conspirationnisme désigne la tendance à attribuer abusivement l’origine d’un événement ou d’un fait jugé néfaste à un inavouable complot dont les auteurs présumés – et/ou ceux à qui il est réputé profiter – conspireraient, dans leur intérêt, à tenir cachée la vérité. « Abusivement » car le récit proposé s’affranchit des règles élémentaires de la méthode scientifique en matière d’administration de la preuve.
Toute théorie du complot propose une version alternative à la version communément admise et généralement officiellement reconnue de faits, d’événements ou de phénomènes tels que :
– les décès de personnalités (John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Coluche, Pierre Bérégovoy, Yitzhak Rabin,Lady Diana, Yasser Arafat, Oussama Ben Laden, David Bowie, etc.)
– les accidents industriels (explosion de l’usine AZF de Toulouse, centrale nucléaire de Fukushima…) ou de transport (naufrage du Titanic, crash de l’A320 de la Germanwings, etc.)
– les catastrophes naturelles (séismes, tsunami, ouragans), attribués à des essais d’armes secrètes
– les attentats terroristes (11 septembre 2001, attentats contre Charlie Hebdo et l’Hyper Cacher de la porte de Vincennes, attentats du 13 novembre 2015, etc.)
– les crises politiques (guerres, coups d’État, révolutions, etc.) ou économiques (crises financières, etc.)
– les crises sanitaires (épidémies, campagnes de vaccination, etc.)
– les phénomènes insolites (« hécatombes animales », traînées de condensation, « ovnis », etc.)
– les faits scientifiques (alunissage, réchauffement climatique, etc.)
– les faits sociaux (inégalités, famines, injustices, corruption, etc.).
Discours de mise en accusation, une théorie du complot consiste à dévoiler l’identité de ceux qui ont intérêt au prétendu complot et qui en sont les commanditaires. Ainsi, une théorie du complot désigne toujours, explicitement ou non, un groupe d’individus ou une organisation plus ou moins structurée comme étant à l’origine du complot allégué : sorcières, lépreux, Templiers, juifs, jésuites, francs-maçons, Illuminati, Synarchie, Sages de Sion, sionisme international, Commission Trilatérale, groupe de Bilderberg, services secrets, banques, groupes industriels, multinationales, « complexe militaro-industriel », mouvements politiques ou religieux, sociétés secrètes, etc.
Les mobiles avancés sont invariablement : la soif de domination, la quête du pouvoir, l’argent, etc.

S’ensuivent quelques « exemples de théories du complot », ainsi que « quelques ‘vraies’ conspirations » également, histoire peut-être de dire qu’ils ne sont pas dans le déni total, et qu’ils ne prétendent pas que les complots n’ont jamais existé. Ils remontent quand-même à Jules César pour cela… Ils ne se mouillent pas trop !
Ce qui est grave, c’est que sont ici mélangées des théories farfelues (influence des sorcières, des lépreux, mort de David Bowie, Protocoles des Sages de Sion, complot des Illuminatis et/ou des reptiliens) avec des événements historiques controversés pour lesquels il est légitime de se poser des questions (assassinat de JFK, 11 septembre, influence de groupes comme celui de Bilderberg et des lobbies en général, etc.). L’effet recherché est d’inciter les jeunes à ne pas écouter les versions alternatives sur ces événements, en amalgamant ces versions à des théories du complot farfelues.
Pourtant, il suffit d’écouter le témoignage d’un ancien homme politique comme Philippe De Villiers. Lorsqu’il demande à François Fillon, notre ancien premier ministre, pourquoi il assiste aux réunions du groupe Bilderberg, celui-ci lui répond : « Que veux tu ? C’est eux qui nous gouvernent ! ».
Nous assistons actuellement au lancement d’une véritable chasse aux sorcières, à la naissance d’un néo-maccarthysme. Il suffit de remplacer « communiste » par « complotiste », et « coco » par « conspi », le parallèle en est troublant. D’autant que cela s’accompagne d’une nouvelle accusation : les théories du complot mineraient la crédibilité donnée aux informations officielles de l’État, et donc indirectement alimenteraient les adversaires de la France.
On voit ainsi le piège se refermer sur les médias alternatifs dans cette nouvelle guerre sans fin contre le terrorisme. Aux États-Unis, elle a commencé au lendemain du 11 septembre 2001. En France, elle a commencé en 2015, au lendemain des attentats de Charlie Hebdo.
Le côté positif de cette histoire, peut-être, c’est qu’elle montre à quel point la jeunesse ne regarde plus la télévision pour s’informer et lui préfère internet, et à quel point cela inquiète le gouvernement. Cela ne peut que nous inciter à continuer notre travail d’information citoyenne. Cela devrait également nous inciter à nous serrer les coudes en tant que citoyens et collectifs engagés, quelle que soit notre cause humaniste, face à des pouvoirs centraux de plus en plus totalitaires. Car s’ils nous divisent pour mieux régner, « ce qui nous unit est plus fort que ce qui nous divise »*.

As a collective of citizen journalists, involved in many causes but notably the issues of individual liberties and freedom of speech, we have felt deeply touched by the message you sent to our nation. It is true that elected representatives of our National Assembly were conspicuously absent during the vote concerning the institution of a permanent state of emergency in our country, and that this is particularly worrying.
But there is worse. Our government is the very first in the world to launch itself into a fully-fledged campaign against « conspiracy theorists ». To this end, it has even set up a website with a revealing name: « ontemanipule.fr »… This campaign is being launched by our Minister of Education Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, amongst others.
The government hopes to fight against conspiracy theories in this way, which would purportedly be highly fashionable among the youth. On the website of the Ministry of Education, one can thus read:
What does being a conspiracy theorist mean?
Definition
Being a conspiracy theorist defines the tendency to falsely grant the origin of an event or of facts deemed to be harmful to an inadmissible conspiracy whose alleged authors – and/or those whom it is meant to benefit – would conspire, in their own interest, to keep the truth hidden. « Falsely », because the suggested narrative frees itself from the elementary rules of scientific method, with regards to the management of evidence.
Any conspiracy theory offers an alternative version to the commonly admitted and generally officially authorised versions of facts, events or phenomena such as:
- the deaths of famous people (John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Coluche, Pierre Bérégovoy, Yitzhak Rabin, Lady Diana, Yasser Arafat, Usama bin Laden, David Bowie, etc.)
- industrial accidents (the explosions at the AZF factory in Toulouse, the nuclear power station at Fukushima…) or transit accidents (sinking of the Titanic, crash of the Germanwings A320, etc.)
- natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes), attributed to secret weapons’ testing
- terrorist attacks (9/11, the Charlie Hebdo attack and the Hyper Cacher attack at the Porte de Vincennes, the attacks of 13th. November, etc.)
- political (wars, coups d’état, revolutions, etc.) or economic crises (financial breakdowns, etc.)
- health crises (epidemics, vaccination campaigns, etc.)
- unusual phenomena (« mass animal deaths », contrails, « UFOs », etc.)
- scientific facts (Moon landings, global warming, etc.)
- social facts (inequalities, famines, injustice, corruption, etc.)
Designed as convicting discourse, a conspiracy theory consists in the revelation of the identities of those who would have a stake in the alleged conspiracy, and be its organisers. In this way, a conspiracy theory always designates, implicitly or not, a group of individuals or a more or less structured organisation as the source of the alleged plot: witches, lepers, Templars, Jews, Jesuits, Freemasons, Illuminati, Synarchy, the Elders of Zion, international Zionism, the Trilateral Commission, the Bilderberg Group, intelligence agencies, banks, industrial interests, transnational companies, the « military-industrial complex », political or religious movements, secret societies, etc.
The proposed motives are always the same: thirst for dominance, the quest for power, money, etc.

There then follow a few « examples of conspiracy theories », as well as « a few ‘real’ conspiracies » so as, perhaps, to imply that they are not in complete denial and aren’t trying to pretend that conspiracies have never existed. They go all the way back to Julius Caesar to do that… They’re not taking many risks!
What is a serious matter though, is that hare-brained theories (the influence of witches, of lepers, the death of David Bowie, the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, the conspiracy of the Illuminati and/or reptilians) here get mixed up with controversial historical events about which doubts are legitimate (the assassination of JFK, 9/11, the influence of groups such as Bilderberg and lobbies in general, etc.). The effect sought after is to incite the youth to shut their ears to the alternative narratives concerning these events, amalgamating them with inconsistent conspiracy theories.
And yet, it merely suffices to listen to the testimony of a veteran politician such as Philippe de Villiers. When he asks of François Fillon, who used to be our Prime Minister, why he goes to the Bilderberg Group’s meetings, the man replies: « What can I do? They’re the ones who rule over us! ».
We are currently witnessing the beginning of an authentic witch-hunt, the birth of a new form of McCarthyism. One only needs to replace « Communist » with « conspiracy theorist », and « Commie » with « conspiracy nut », the parallel is startling. Especially since this is accompanied by a novel accusation: conspiracy theories would be guilty of undermining the credibility of the official information supplied by the State, and would thus indirectly nurture France’s adversaries.
Here, we can see a trap closing in on alternative media in this new endless war on terrorism. In the United States, it began the day following 11 September, 2001. In France it began in 2015, the day following the Charlie Hebdo attacks.
It may be that the positive side to this story lies in the extent to which it shows that youths no longer watch television to find information and turn to the Internet, and how much this worries the government. This can only encourage us to pursue our work as citizen journalists. It should also incite us to draw tighter together as involved citizens and collectives, whatever our humanist cause, to confront central powers that are becoming more and more totalitarian. Because, if they divide us in order to reign over us, « that which unites us is stronger than that which drives us apart »*.
