Peter B. Collins Presents Prof. Margo Schlanger
With an insider’s view of domestic surveillance operations, Margo Schlanger explains how the authorities claimed under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, Section 702 of the FISA law, and executive order 12333 are used to collect information on Americans and non-US persons. Noting that modest reforms do little to curtail Suspicionless electronic surveillance, Prof. Schlanger calls for a more adversarial FISA Court while your host calls for abolishing the secret court altogether. We also discuss her work at Homeland Security’s Office for Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, and she responds to charges that DHS used the system intended to take on foreign terrorists to crack down on First Amendment actions by the Occupy movement.
