Panera to Remove All Artificial Ingredients by 2016 – But What About GMOs?

Panera Bread, I want to thank you for becoming a healthier restaurant to stop at when I am driving across the country and I see one of your retail locations. It is wonderful that you plan to remove all additives, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, preservatives, and high fructose corn syrup from the food on your menu by 2016, but what about GMOs?
Despite what some may say, genetically modified foods have not yet been proven safe. As the World Health Organization, and over 300,000 doctors and health professionals from Argentina have recently explained, glyphosate resides are showing up at all levels of our food chain.
These chemicals cause cancer, reproductive issues, liver problems, and more. Surely, while you are making the responsible move of removing other carcinogenic and obesity-causing additives from your menu, you can consider removing GM foods as well.

We know that you want to beat out competition like McDonald’s that is increasingly becoming a dinosaur in the fast-food industry for failure to respond to consumer demand for healthier menu items.
We know you want to compete with companies like Chipotle who have seen a surge in stock prices for using organic produce, reducing the use of factory farmed chicken and beef, and avoiding GMO ingredients.
We know that if you care enough to remove additives, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, preservatives, and high fructose corn syrup from the food’s you serve, you also wouldn’t want to give your customers food that is full of Bt toxins, a registered pesticide, and GM food which is known to have higher levels of pesticides.
Surely you realize that GM foods are about as ‘artificial’ as it comes, since the seed is altered from its very DNA, and with not a single risk-assessment ever conducted on the crazy concoctions that come out of the biotech’s lab.
Panera, we applaud your decision to provide healthier food to people everywhere, but let’s step it up to remain competitive in a market where people are waking up to the realities of their food. Say no to GMOs!
