As the attempted coup in Turkey was taking place on July 15, 2016, a report began to circulate widely that Turkey’s President Erdogan had fled the country by air and was requesting asylum in Germany. NBC News was cited as the source of this report. A tweet from MSNBC Segment Producer, Kyle Griffin, has also been cited in many articles. Griffin’s tweet, now deleted, stated, “senior US military source tells NBC News that Erdogan, refused landing rights in Istanbul, is reported to be seeking asylum in Germany.”
This false report was presented as factual, and was cited and re-reported by many media outlets, despite being proven false within a couple of hours of NBC’s initial report (At the time of the report President Erdogan was in Turkey- preparing his press conference in Istanbul).
On July 21, 2016, Newsbud began a campaign to demand a public explanation and retraction of this report from NBC News. Tens of thousands of concerned people have also requested a response and explanation from NBC News. Further, on Monday, July 25, 2016, the Turkish Embassy in Washington D.C. officially demanded a public response and apology from NBC News. To date, there has been no public response from NBC News.
As a result, Newsbud will demand this explanation and retraction in person at NBC News Headquarters in New York City, Thursday, August 4th, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. (ET). Afterwards, Newsbud founder Sibel Edmonds will make a statement outside NBC News headquarters and take questions from members of the press, independent journalists, and concerned activists.
This is a call to all supporters of Newsbud’s #Confront NBC campaign, and to all concerned people and journalists who expect ethical journalism and integrity from the media, to join us. We will be gathering with all participants at 12:00 p.m. ET, Thursday, August 4, 2016, in front of NBC HQ in New York City at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
