A Minnesota cop renowned for being a “DWI Enforcer All-Star” for arresting 123 drunk drivers in 2008 was arrested for drunk driving Wednesday around 3 a.m. after apparently running over some stop signs.
When police asked how much he had to drink, Minnesota State Police Sergeant Chris Daas replied, “too much.”
He then refused a blood test.
According to CBSMinnesota, Fridley police said Daas was booked into Anoka County Jail after police responded to reports that road signs were run over on the 500 block of Osborne Road.
Officers then spotted Daas behind the wheel in a broken down truck at the 7600 of University Avenue where police say he smelled of alcohol.
Daas, who has been a state trooper since 2004, has been placed on investigatory leave until the outcome of his criminal and internal investigation is determined.
In 2011, a complaint was filed against Sgt. Daas that resulted in a five-day suspension. However, the State Patrol refused to release details about the incident or speak to the details surrounding the suspension.
Col. Matt Langer, Chief of the Minnesota State Patrol, released a statement regarding Daas’ arrest.
“State Troopers are dedicated to removing impaired drivers from the road, and that’s why this incident is disturbing. Chris Daas’ alleged behavior does not reflect our core values as an organization, nor does it demonstrate our expectations for troopers, whether on- or off-duty,” the chief said, according to KTSP.
According to police officials, Daas has won several awards including a life-saving award, a meritorious service award and a letter of commendation.
Daas was charged with two misdemeanors including refusal to submit to a chemical test and driving while impaired.
He’s scheduled to appear in court on July 14.
