The Art of Irrelevance-Pop Culture in Modern Society

Art, entertainment, music, movies, tv and celebrities: popular culture has largely become a celebration of irrelevance. Popular culture holds entrenched class differences, and for mass consumption, is largely used as a method of distraction and control. As art reflects life, or life reflects art, the irrelevance of popular culture – and most explicitly celebrity culture – is engrained in the irrelevance of our modern societies in terms of meeting human needs and desires. We have a society obsessed with symbols, yet void of substance. Welcome to the culture of irrelevance.
