Draitser explains that the US is trying to use MH17 to achieve politically what its proxy government in Kiev could not achieve militarily, namely the retreat of anti-Kiev separatists. He notes that the US has attempted to frame the narrative by blaming Russia for the tragedy, despite providing no hard evidence to refute that provided by Russia. Draitser also highlights the fact that Europe has not been entirely in line with Washington’s rhetoric and position vis-a-vis Ukraine, and the coverage of this incident will be a good indication of the degree to which that divide is growing.
