Anthony Gucciardi to Talk Solutions at March Against Monsanto 2015

Over the past few years we have had numerous victories in the fight to reclaim the food supply from giants like Monsanto, from wide scale public awakening to the stunning success of statewide GMO labeling campaigns. These unprecedented events have paved the way for the largest anti-Monsanto event yet: March Against Monsanto 2015 — the grassroots initiative to take back the food supply from Monsanto’s grasp.
March Against Monsanto is an initiative that I am happy to continue to support, as I have personally spoken with those behind the campaign and can tell you that they are true activists with good intentions. We have been covering the protest since its inception, and it’s amazing to reflect on how far Monsanto’s own story line continues to change within the timeframe of 365 days.
After all, it was back in 2011 that the Natural Society team and I declared Monsanto to be the worst company of the year for threatening both human health and the environment at large. But we did not make this declaration alone. Instead, a collective voice of readers and concerned independent thinkers were quick to select Monsanto as their absolute ‘worst company’ of the year — with flying colors.
With headlines such as “Monsanto earnings fall 34% after a year of global protests” and “People Really Hate Monsanto, Its Latest Move Shows it Couldn’t Care Less,” it’s easy to see how Monsanto become despised by most of the modern world. After all, why would people want to support a chemical company that has launched a hostile takeover of the food supply?
Because, remember, one of the main reasons that so many individuals are so concerned about Monsanto stems from their own attempts to silence us. Attempts that involve millions in funding to lobbyist organizations aimed at shutting down GMO labeling legislation that would let you know what you’re eating. That’s right, Monsanto is fighting tooth and nail to ensure that the consumer doesn’t know what’s being consumed. This kind of dominant secrecy is what’s causing people to ask: If Monsanto is so proud of what it produces, why doesn’t the company label it’s food?
Well, because no one would want it.
With over 90^ of US citizens asking their government to label GE foods (according to a poll from Consumer Reports), any company trying to shut these initiatives down is likely to face notable friction from consumers.
This is evidenced by Monsanto’s declining profits and continued rejections of its food from other nations. One of my most passionate topics of late has been the financial decline of both McDonald’s and Monsanto as consumers continue to drop them. As the Associated Press article ‘Monsanto Loses $156 Million in Fiscal Fourth Quarter’ explains, the multinational corporation has entered a very unique loss period that spells out a lot about the future of its GMO technology.
While Monsanto continues to churn out GM food creations, consumer demand for organic, non-GMO food is absolutely booming. In fact, demand is booming so much that the U.S. is importing organic crops from other nations to fulfill what consumers are asking for. Let’s face it; a vote for organic is a vote against Monsanto.
Eating organic is no longer ‘fringe’ or something done solely by ‘health-nuts’ or ‘hippies’. Demand for organic food is seeing double digit growth year over year, and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping. In 2012, more than $28.4 million was spent on healthful organic food. Now, in 2015, we are seeing a drastic increase. According to Nutrition Business Journal, organic food sales will reach a startling $35 billion this year.
As we continue to spread the word on these issues, there is no question that Monsanto will continue to lose money while simultaneously launching clandestine attacks on those who question their creations. That’s why they have an entire department dedicated to ‘discrediting’ the opposition, as a Monsanto employee let slip in a recent conference. As information continues to spread on key issues like the prevalence of toxic substances within our food and the reality behind GMOs, there is no doubt that Monsanto and others will experience a downward spiral involving economic backlash and consumer outrage.
