Journalists, Activists Condemn UK Decision to Keep Assange Locked Up without Charge

“To us, that is nothing more than a pretext to keep him detained. This seems unnecessarily punitive and adding insult to injury after the 10 years of hell that he has endured” -- Rebecca Vincent, Reporters Without Borders

Silencing the Media: Attacks Grow More Open, With Women as Particular Targets

Clarice Gargard, a Dutch columnist for a large newspaper in the Netherlands, has described receiving online threats and attacks in comments related to her work. The remarks, she says, are mostly related to her “giving a different perspective on society.”
When Reporters Without Borders recently tallied the murders of journalists across the globe in 2019, the organization found that the confirmed death toll, 49, was the lowest since 2003. That was the good news.

Money, Power and Turf: Winning the Middle East Media War at Any Cost

It is hardly surprising to see Middle Eastern countries at the bottom of the World Press Freedom Index, as the worst violators of freedom of the press. But equally alarming is the complete polarization of public opinion as a result of self-serving media and, bankrolled by rich Arab countries, whose only goal is to serve their specific, often sinister, agendas.

Climate change’s ‘evil twin’ Ocean Acidification (and problem stepchild, Ocean Hypoxia)

People ask: Why should I care about the ocean? Because the ocean is the cornerstone of earth’s life support system, it shapes climate and weather. It holds most of life on earth. Ninety-seven percent earth’s water is there. It’s the blue heart of the planet – we should take care of our heart. It’s what makes life possible for us. We still have a really good chance to make things better than they are. They won’t get better unless we take the action and inspire others to do the same thing. No one is without power. Everybody has the capacity to do something.

A Record Year of Death and Demonization for Journalism Globally

Wendi Winters, a reporter and editor with the Capital Gazette, in Annapolis, Md., was one of three female journalists murdered this year worldwide, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. The Gazette was attacked on June 28 by a gunman who also killed four others in the ambush. Winters, who was 65, was a mother of four children who apparently charged the gunman, thus saving others’ lives.

But the club’s director won’t budge, noting that such demands are typically made by oppressive regimes. Guy Mettan, executive director of the […]

Reporters Without Principles?

Anybody who pays critical attention to outputs of corporate news media will be aware that the idea of a free press, while lauded in principle, is scarcely actualised in practice. A further worrying development is that the very principles animating the idea are apparently being called into question by an organisation that purports to defend them.

Reporters Without Borders thinks ISIS in Africa and al-Qaeda in Syria are less dangerous to free speech than Putin and Xi

A row has erupted between the French based group Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontières–RSF) and RT’s editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan.
The incident began when RSF referred to individuals at RT as “enemies of journalism”. Simonyan fired back saying that the group should ‘self-dissolve’.
