Porkins Policy Radio episode 113 Michael Swanson on Ken Burns Vietnam Propaganda

Michael Swanson, the author of The War State, joins me for an in-depth discussion of the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick Vietnam documentary series. I begin the conversation by discussing my own fascination with the Vietnam War. I talk about the influence my father has had on my understanding of the war, touching on his experiences with the army when he was drafted in 1969. Michael and I then dive into the film itself. We look at some of the serious flaws and aspects that the we felt were left out with the film including the CIA and drug trafficking.

SUNDAY SCREENING: Guns, Drugs & the CIA (1988)

This week’s documentary screening, curated by our editorial team at 21WIRE.
This was quite a groundbreaking investigation and production at the time, which aired on US public television in 1988, detailing the US government’s own role, along with the CIA – in trafficking in illicit narcotics proceeds that were used to shore up the Contra “freedom fighters” effort in Nicaragua.
“The history of the CIA runs parallel to criminal and drug operations throughout the world, but it’s coincidental. Is the CIA using drug money to finance covert operations?”

Porkins Policy Radio episode 78 Hugo Turner: Ted Shackley a Life in The CIA

Hugo Turner of Anti-Imperialist-U for an in depth discussion of Ted Shackley and his infamous career in the CIA. We focus on Hugo’s articles chronicling Ted Shackley as well as the Iran Contra Scandal. We begin by taking a look at Shackley’s beginnings in military intelligence recruiting Nazi’s, and his later recruitment into the CIA during the Korean War. Hugo paints us a picture of the man that Shackley would become: obsessively driven and cutthroat. We touch on some of Shackley’s early mentors such as William Harvey who introduced Shackley to the Cuban exile committee.

Esoteric Hollywood: CIA, CFR, Castro & Cuba – Dialectical Psy Ops Vid (Half)

In this latest installment, I consider the polarizing figure of Fidel Castro in relation to the numerous tales of CIA subterfuge and “assassination attempts,” as well as the larger picture of how the CIA works under the CFR to control Latin America, and thus how Latin American operations are a microcosm of how the rest of the sectors are managed – from the Middle East to Eurasia.  Purchase his books here.
