Mass College Hunger is a Statistical Sham

The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal sponsored a debate between myself and four of the leading academic activists on food insecurity among college students. Here is a list of those experts; my piece is reposted below.

Haiti on this Earthquake Anniversary Still Pays the Price for Having Fought Slavery

One would think that, now that the despised 14-year long United Nations Mission for the (de)Stabilization of Haiti (MINUSTAH) has been forced to shut down, Haiti would be on the road to some modest, sustained, recovery from the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake. It is not. The Republic of Haiti has never been in greater danger than it is now.

Think Outside the Box: 2-Acre Shipping-Container Farm Feeds 150

I grew up surrounded by farmland and lived near rural Tennessee for a time, yet I wouldn’t have the foggiest idea how to start a farm. But if I wanted to experience farming on a small scale, Farm From the Box would be the way to go. The tiny house movement has shown us that shipping containers can be turned into stylish homes, and 2-acre farms capable of feeding 150 people come in shipping containers, too.
The really cool part: you can do it off the grid. [1]

“[Famine] seems to be the last, most dreadful resource of nature…the power of population is so superior to the power in the earth to provide subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race.”
– Thomas Malthus, “Essay on Population”

Extreme Couponer Plans to Feed 30,000 People by Her 30th Birthday

Lauren Puryear, 29, has fed more than 5,000 on a shoestring budget through her knack of “extreme couponing.” But that’s not enough for her; her goal is to feed 30,000 meals to the hungry and homeless by the time she turns 30 next September 14. [1]
Source: ABC News
It’s a lofty, if not impossible-sounding, goal, but Puryear claims she can feed 150 people for as little as $20, depending on what she buys. She’s so good at couponing, she often gets money back. [2]
Said Puryear of helping others:

American Food Insecurity on the Decline but Still Widespread

Food insecurity in the United States may be declining, but many families are still unsure of where their next meal will come from.
According to the USDA, the number of households that were food insecure at some point during 2015 was down to 12.7% from 14% in 2014. However, food insecurity is more pervasive now than it was in 2007 when it was around 11%, almost a full 2% lower than it is today.

Moms Launch Food Pantry Tailored for Kids with Allergies

If you have a child that is restricted to a “special” diet because of food allergies or other health issues, you know how expensive it can be trying to tailor your meals and snacks so that he doesn’t wind up with hives, or worse. Two Kansas moms with lots of experience in trying to keep their kiddos healthy and happy without breaking the bank decided to do something about it.
