Dreamers

Republicans announced the bipartisan 'Dignity Plan', which includes protections for Dreamers, the estimated 800,000 DACA recipients who came to the US undocumented as children, as well as a ten-year path for those who lived in the shadows here in the US.

Programs like DACA, which effectively granted amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, amount to lawmaking and ought to be passed by lawmakers, not decreed by presidents who can’t get their preferred policies through a divided Congress. And the Supreme Court has allowed it.

Mainstream media reported that the Supreme Court seemed likely to shut down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals/ DACA program, the federal scheme that has allowed nearly 800,000 young people, known as "dreamers," to live and work in the US, protecting them from deportation.

More than a dozen House Republicans are circulating a petition to GOP leaders to vote now or they will force a vote to allow mass amnesty and citizenship for 'Dreamers'. The majority of Americans reject mass immigration and amnesty, but the Democrats and a significant group of Republicans are pushing hard for it - right now. [...]

On Friday, 23 March, US President Donald Trump took a path most uncomfortable in his presidency, signing a massive, 2,232 page spending bill that is not even a budget, but rather a glorified continuing resolution with money for things he likes and things he does not like.  The bill was presented with literally 1,000 minutes for all the congressmen to consider. At more than two pages a minute, it is not likely that this legislation was fully reviewed by any one person.

It’s deja-vu all over again, as baseball legend Yogi Berra might have said. The politicians and media are telling us the world is coming to an end because a “compromise” could not be made at the 11th hour to keep the Federal government in business.

The Center for American Progress Action Fund, founded by Clinton operative, John Podesta, sent out a memo that reads, “If Democrats don’t try to do everything in their power to defend Dreamers, that will jeopardize Democrats’ electoral chances in 2018 and beyond." [President Trump knows this better than most and, by supporting DACA, has knowingly handed the Democrats a powerful advantage in future elections.] [...]

DACA allows 700,000 people to stay in the US who were brought in illegally when they were children. Trump now says he will accept any bill that Congress presents to him, which is a total abandonment of his promises to end DACA, stop chain migration, and build the wall. [Those who voted for him because of these promises have been betrayed again.] [...]

After an official announcement from President Donald Trump’s administration regarding plans to shut down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, in place since 2012, former President Barack Obama released a statement that stands firmly in the middle, an art the Democratic Party has mastered. It had the same flatlined bipartisan tone one has come to expect from Democrats.
