Project Censored cordially invites you to the The Media Freedom Summit 2.0: Critical Media Literacy for Social Justice, to be held at College of Marin (COM) just north of San Francisco on October 26-27, 2018. The Summit will be an opportunity for journalists, students, faculty, activists, and community members to identify and address crucial threats to media freedom, to learn about and share effective strategies for advancing media freedom, and to promote critical media literacy education in service of social justice, civic engagement, and positive, meaningful change in local communities and larger society. Facilitators will lead discussion sections whose findings will be published in an essay that expresses the goals for media freedom and approaches for critical media education to foster social justice and equity. This event will adopt more of an un-conference approach in that we expect presentations to be interactive and inclusive of both presenters and attendees. We intend to use the conversation cafe model to engage all participants in the process based on the group agreements: www.conversationcafe.org.
To revitalize and retool media democracy in today’s media landscape, Project Censored, Media Freedom Foundation, College of Marin, ACME and The Weave are teaming up for our 2018 conference. Project Censored has worked to overcome concentrated political-economic power in order to contribute to a world based on economic justice, equality, and peace. Founded in 1976, Project Censored has made its mission to expose and counteract modern-day censorship. Together, the Summit organizers and cosponsors hope to contribute to a more democratic society and world by sharing our scholarly and activist projects.
The Summit is cosponsored by ACME: Action Coalition for Media Education and The Weave.
