More than 2,000 workers were dispatched to Southwest China to help with relief efforts after the landslide in Guizhou [Xinhua]
Chinese officials in the southwestern province of Guizhou say the death toll from a landslide which struck early Monday has now risen to 23 and warned the number could go higher as rescue operations continue.
They say that relief units were able to pull eight people alive out of the debris but that they were still looking for 12 reported missing.
The landslide, which struck early Monday in Zhangjiawan Township, Nayong County, buried and caused extensive damage to at least 34 homes.
Several of China’s provinces have been pummeled by heavy rainfall in the wake of two powerful typhoons which have hit the mainland since June.
On August 7, a landslide due to heavy rainfall killed 23 people in Puge county in China’s mountainous southwestern province of Sichuan.
On June 25, a landslide in Xinmo also in Sichuan killed at least 30 people.
