Three talented authors with new books about protest and social change engage in discussion on "Activism in the age of Trump".Our guests today:
L.A. Kaufman, Direct Action: Protest and the Reinvention of American Radicalism (Verso books)
Sarah van Gelder, The Revolution Where You Live: Stories from a 12,000 Mile Journey Through a New America (Berrett-Koehler)
Tom Atlee, Empowering Public Wisdom: A Practical Vision of Citizen-Led Politics (Evolver Editions Manifesto Series)
Each participant brings rich experience and a unique perspective to our conversation: Kaufman's deep history of covering and participating in major actions; van Gelder's insight into local activist movements; and Atlee's vision of capturing the energy of opposition to Trump for long-term change through Citizen Deliberative Councils.
We open with thumbnails of each author's book, and discuss their particular focus.  From there, we talk about the challenge of current protests, where "black bloc" groups use vandalism and violence to make their points, undermining the strength of nonviolent expression.
We talk about Occupy and the recent actions at Standing Rock as examples of protests that resonated, producing some unexpected outcomes.  We talk about the March 8 International Women's Day protests, and the January 21 women's march in Washington and many other cities.
Each author has some powerful insights, so enjoy the conversation!
Errata: your humble host credited Pete Seeger for "This Land is Your Land"; Seeger recorded the song, but Woody Guthrie wrote it.
