Eric Draitser of StopImperialism.org provides his short commentary (October 7, 2015) on Russia’s motivations in Syria. He notes that while Russia has very pragmatic reasons for becoming involved in Syria, the mission is also symbolic; Russia is sending a message to the US and, most importantly, to the world, that unchallenged US hegemony in both the political and military spheres is no longer the reality.
