The U.S.-backed Saudi coalition in Yemen carried out another disturbing war crime against civilians. A series of airstrikes killed at least 55 civilians and injured over 170 more at a busy fish market and hospital. According to Yemen’s Health Ministry, the victims included nine children.
On August 2nd, U.S.-backed Saudi warplanes attacked the bustling al-Mehout fish market in the city of Hodeida, western Yemen.
Shortly after the attack, warplanes circled back to launch a second attack. This time, however, the U.S.-backed planes targeted the entrance to al-Thawrah Hospital located downtown. This prompted the hospital commissioner to put in a distress call for help.
According to a Health Ministry Spokesperson, the U.S.-backed warplanes deliberately targeted ambulances and paramedics in front of the hospital’s main gate. Fighter jets continue to target the injured as they were transported from Hodeida to Sana’a.
Medical crews from the capital city of Sana’a were brought in to assist their colleagues in Hodeida. Hodeida is a five-hour drive from Sana’a.
Yemen’s Health Ministry also made an urgent appeal for citizens to donate blood. In the aftermath of large U.S.-backed Saudi attacks, such as those on weddings, markets, and funerals, it’s common for local hospitals to run short on blood and staff members.
In 2016, U.S.-backed warplanes struck a funeral hall in Yemen killing over 150 and injuring over 500 other civilians. A recent wedding attack this year killed over 30 attendees — including the bride — and injured over 50.
The United States has provided the bulk of bombs and weapons to the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen for over three years. Washington also provides logistical and intelligence support for selecting airstrike targets. The war against Yemen would not be possible without U.S. support.
