Five-year-old William Evertz Jr. spent several months saving up his allowance to hopefully purchase a Power Wheels police car. But in the end, he decided to use the money he made doing odd chores around the house to give back to police officers in his local South New Jersey community. [1]
The little boy was inspired after seeing a YouTube video in which someone helped homeless people, and he decided he could put his money to better use than his coveted police car.
William dubbed Wednesday August 24, 2016 as “Kindness Day” as he toured the town doing small deeds of kindness for the community.
His first stop was the Winslow Police Department, where he showed up with a catered lunch and snacks from a local Subway and balloons for the officers on duty. He was even given a special key so he could unlock the police entrance by himself.
William told the staff that he wanted to be a police officer one day, just like them, as they help “keep us safe.” Police Chief George Smith gave William police memorabilia include pens and magnets to thank him for the delicious lunch he had paid for.
The police department thanked William and the Evertz clan on their Facebook page and wrote about his efforts, stating:
“One of his acts was to deliver lunch to the police officers in his community who keep him safe ‘even when he sleeps.’ William chose to buy lunch from his allowance from Subway because he wants the officers to ‘be healthy.’
Williams’s actions are remarkable for anyone, let alone a 5 year old. Winslow Twp PD commends William for his acts of kindness and his parents for raising such a great kid.”
The 5-year-old didn’t stop there. After letting the police know he wanted to be on the force when he grew up, he also donated some of his toys to a local homeless shelter. He even gave a family in need $25 to help with daycare expenses for their little ones. He rounded off his Kindness Day by giving food to a local animal shelter.
“The world definitely needs more people like him. It definitely goes a long way,” said Officer Justin Valentino.
